"Tito Tariero" is the new record from Maurizio Geri's Swingtet, the best known manouche style group in Italy. Like their previous works, “Manouche e dintorni” (1996) and “A cielo aperto” (2002), it takes its inspiration from classical French gypsy-jazz combined with traditional Italian sounds, world music and original songwriting.
The tracks were recorded live in the studio to preserve the freshness of the group playing together and the closeness of the solos.
There are several original compositions (“Piccolo valzer”, “Foresta”, “Gingillone”, “Rapido per Algeri”, “Algeri”, “Mito”, “Ali’s wing”, “Presente archeologico”) interwoven with reworkings of beautiful original pieces (“Melodie au crepuscule”, “Hunn o pani naschella”, “Melancolia”, “Cette nuit là”) in a way that by now characterises the research and musical choices made by this group.
The Maurizio Geri Swingtet is the only Italian group to have taken part in the Django Reinhardt di Samois Festival (Paris), and in offering a uniquely "Italian" approach has attracted increasing numbers of followers amongst fans of the genre.
“The guitarist is fine and sensitive, Maurizio Geri weds poetry and musicality in his elegant phrasing; neither too soft nor too insistent; his notes always have meaning; listen to his enlightening interpretation of “Mélodie au crepuscule”, on a classical Godin guitar; after a refined introduction, Maurizio alternates a sound of chords and a single note with an immense sense of respiration; a lesson for all would be interpreters of Django...”.
